Sisters Across the Nation Serve in Solidarity
National - March 7, 2009 - Sisters across the United States came together in a show of solidarity to perform over 280 hours of community service. For the second year, the National Day of Service proved to be a huge success with more than 100 sisters. These totals double the amount of the First Annual National Day of Service
SIA has always been proud of its work within the community on the national and local level. The Day of Service, began by National President Ivone De Jesus, is a day-long event in which sisters choose a service activity in their communities. "Many thanks to all who volunteered...(we are) looking forward to having this initiative continue for many, many years to come!†says National President, Ivone De Jesus.
This year sisters chose to volunteer at their local YMCAs, Ronald McDonald Houses and the Red Cross. Sisters in the New York City region teamed up to volunteer at the SHPE Science Bowl. Phi, Alpha Theta, the Colony at Pace University and the Gamma Gamma (pictured) spent the day helping with set up and running the event. Down in Texas, sisters of the Colony at University of Texas -Austin volunteered in therapeutic sessions with autistic children at Thoughtful House Equestrian. On the West Coast, the Alpha Zeta Chapter (pictured) gave their time working with the homeless on Skid Row in Los Angeles.
Thank you to those sisters and families who volunteered their time for a second year. The SIA National Day of Service continues to be a success not just for the organization, but also for those receiving.
